Infrastructure + Technology: The Pursuit to be Greenest & Most Energy-Efficient Port in North America

The Port of Seattle has activated a number of projects that align with its Maritime Climate and Air Action Plan to reduce its carbon footprint. Targeting key carbon-emitting sources, they are investing in infrastructure that will reduce non-productive vehicle circulation, optimize garage utilization, increase access to electric recharging stations, and improve customer satisfaction. We are leading teams in fulfilling their vision.

Technology-Enhanced Experience

The automated parking guidance system utilizes wayfinding signage, smart sensors, and LED lights to designate available or occupied stalls. Located in the drive lanes, visitors can quickly scan rows for pinpointed openings based on the red or green light at the opening of each stall. Parking the vehicle triggers the sensor that features camera-based license plate recognition (LPR) technology to assist operations staff with parking policy enforcement (ex. restricted, premium stalls, overstays), as well as help guests locate their vehicle in the event they forgot where they parked. With this integrated system, guests can also pre-book a stall for guaranteed parking and possible discounts during times of low occupancy.

Electrified Transportation

The adoption of electric vehicles is influencing the pace of charging station (EVCs) installations – both in the garage and on the ground. A phased installation in the parking garage will double the current number of EVCs, to 94, and improve charging capacity with 240V power supply.

On the airfield side of operations, electric charging stations are being phased in to support the Port’s electrification of their ground support equipment (GSE) fleet. Through close coordination with the Port, airline representatives, and SEA’s master plan, 50 GSE charging ports are being integrated into 13 locations across Concourse A as part of the Phase 2A scope of work. When all of the EVCs are installed, the improvements are expected to reduce the Port’s operating CO2 emissions by 4,000-5,000 metric tons per year and other air pollutants (SO2, NOx, etc.) by 200 tons.
